How do I know my well pump needs attention?
- No water, or taps that sputter
- Low or fluctuating water pressure
- A pump that runs constantly, or switches on and off rapidly
- Cloudy, sandy or muddy water
- Air spurting from taps
- Unusual noises from the pump or the pressure tank, or a higher electricity bill
What should I do if my well water stops?
- Check that the power is on and that the pump’s breaker has not tripped. Do not keep resetting it if it trips again.
- Use the water you have stored sparingly until the problem is found.
- If the water looks, smells or tastes different, have it tested before you drink it.
- Call a plumber.
What do we do on a well pump job?
- Diagnose the pump, pressure tank, pressure switch, wiring and piping.
- Repair the pump or its components when a repair is practical.
- Replace a pump that has failed or worn out.
- Install a new well pump.
- Check pressure and operation once the work is done.
- Tell you when the problem points beyond the plumbing, for example to the well itself.
How can I avoid well pump problems?
- Do not ignore changes in water pressure or new noises.
- Keep the area around the pressure tank and well clear.
- Know where the pump’s breaker is.
- Have your well water tested regularly. Your local public health unit can explain how.
What affects the cost of well pump repair or replacement?
Every well is different. The main factors are:
- Repair or replacement
- The type of pump and the depth of the well
- Whether other parts need work, such as the pressure tank, pressure switch or wiring
- Access to the wellhead and the condition of the piping

Frequently asked questions
How long does a well pump last?
A well pump commonly lasts around 10 to 15 years, depending on how hard it works, the water and the well itself. If yours is in that range and starts to weaken, plan for a replacement.
Why is my well pump running constantly?
Common causes are a leak in the plumbing, a failing pressure switch, a waterlogged pressure tank, a worn pump or a drop in the water level in the well. A plumber can find which one.
Why did my water pressure drop?
A drop in pressure can come from a worn pump, a problem with the pressure tank or switch, a clogged filter or a leak. It is worth having it checked before the pump fails completely.
What should I do if I have no water?
Check that the power is on and the breaker has not tripped. If you still have no water, call a plumber. Running a pump with no water can damage it, so avoid repeatedly resetting the breaker.
Do you service well pumps outside Rockland?
